The original Mobile Suit Gundam is a fascinating series in many ways. It was one of the earliest works of the then fledgling studio Sunrise and the series’ inception was by no means a smooth one. To look back then on the original work that created the global phenomenon that is Gundam is in part a history lesson but more an exercise in solid storytelling and characterization.
Mobile Suit Gundam begins as the One Year War between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon is still raging. This is a war unlike any other in humanity’s history, as it is between people in new space-based nation states in orbiting colonies against those on Earth. In amongst this is a major technological advance to do with the Minovsky particle.
